Festive-Season PR: Story Ideas for Local Businesses in Guwahati

From Durga Puja to Diwali, newsrooms fill their pages with festival stories, and every shop in town fills the advertising space beside them. A promotional message gets lost in that noise. A real story about your business and the season can still get through.

This guide gives seven story angles that fit the festive season, a four-week plan and a list of what editors usually skip. It is written for Guwahati business owners, whether you run a clinic, a shop, a school, a restaurant or a startup.

Why the festive season is good and hard

It is good because readers want local, human stories at this time of year, and newsrooms need more of them. It is hard because every business speaks at once and every desk is busy. A story only works if it is about people and the community, not about your discount.

Seven story angles

  1. A maker or craft story. Idol makers, sweet shops, weavers, potters, decorators: who they are, how long they have worked and what has changed. This suits any business with a craft behind it.
  2. A community or charity drive. A food or clothes collection, a health camp, a clean-up after the festival. Give the numbers and the names.
  3. Practical advice from an expert. A doctor on festive eating, a safety trainer on lights and decorations, a travel tip for the holiday rush. Newsrooms like comments they can quote.
  4. A behind-the-scenes look. How a pandal is built, how a bakery handles a hundred orders a day, how a courier plans for the festival rush.
  5. Something genuinely new for the season. A new product, service or way of working. Say exactly what is new, and why it matters to readers.
  6. A customer or employee story. The shopkeeper who has served three generations of one family, or a staff member who has worked every festive season for twenty years. You need their permission and a photo.
  7. A number that tells a story. If you have your own figures, such as orders, donations collected or students enrolled, one honest number with context can be news.

Pick one angle and do it well. Seven stories sent at once look like a campaign, not like news.

A four-week plan

  • Four weeks before: choose the angle, find a spokesperson and decide what you can prove.
  • Three weeks before: gather the facts, the names and two or three clear photos of people, not just of a banner.
  • Two weeks before: write the press note and send it to the right desks. Our guide on how to write a press release has a free template, and the one on getting featured in Assam’s newspapers explains who to send it to and how.
  • Festival week: keep your phone on and be ready to give a quick comment or a photo. Share the story on your own channels.
  • After the festival: thank the journalists, save the clippings and note which angle worked. Plan the next story for the next season.

If the festival is only days away, do not skip it. Choose the simplest angle, such as an expert tip or a community drive, and send it today. Local desks often take timely items at short notice.

What editors skip

  • Greetings with a logo. “Wishing you a happy festival” is not a story. Use it on your social pages, not as a press note.
  • Discount announcements. These belong in advertising, and editors know it.
  • Stories with no local angle. Say what it means for people in Guwahati or Assam.
  • Late notes. A note that arrives after the festival is old news.

What to prepare

  • A fact sheet: your business name, what you do, where you are, and your phone or WhatsApp number.
  • One person who can talk to the media, with their name and designation.
  • Two or three photos of people, with captions that name them.
  • Your proof: the number, the date or the document behind every claim you make.

Frequently asked questions

Should I send festival greetings to the media?

No. A greeting is not news. Post it on your own channels and keep the press note for a real story.

Is it too late if the festival is close?

Not if you choose a simple angle and send it quickly. An expert tip or a community drive can be prepared in a day.

Should I advertise as well?

Many businesses do both. Advertising brings quick sales, and a good story builds trust. Decide by what you need most in the next month: sales or trust.
